How do you transform a clinical visit to the dentist, loaded with memories of past treatments and the apprehension of potential pain, into an experience of serenity and style?
While we can’t do anything about the treatments, our amazing commercial design team can definitely do something to up the calm and comfort - and we’ve had the chance to weave our interiors wands over a couple of healthcare practices recently.
We were pretty thrilled by the results, even if we do say so ourselves!
So here we thought we’d offer a sneak peek into the Design Tonic playbook for medical interiors, and share a little of what we learned along the way…

Sterile is so last century
Things have changed a lot in the world of dentistry.
Once completely overlooked as a space for style, today’s dental practices blend medical necessity and aesthetics, often offering a whole menu of cosmetic treatments alongside the routine check-ups and scale-and-polishes.
This new era calls for a revolution in how patients perceive their “trip to the dentist”.
And the fastest and most impactful way to achieve that is to elevate the customer experience, with a carefully crafted, holistic healthcare environment geared towards wellbeing and calm, where form and function meet in perfect, relaxing harmony.

Setting the Stage for a Zen Healthcare experience
Patients often harbour apprehensions and fears related to dental procedures, and a stylish entrance serves as an instant reassurance, communicating a commitment to care that goes beyond the clinical and diminishing the inherent stress associated with dental visits.
From the moment you enter Churchview Dental Practice, it’s clear that this is going to be a dentists’ visit with a difference.
The guiding themes here are soothing and stylish, with luxe textures and wow-factor lighting combining for a spectacularly pampering feel.
Thoughtfully crafted to set visitors at ease, the journey through the reception area is filled with high-end texture and tone, the gentle greiges and reflective marbling maximising natural light without feeling in any way stark.
And in the seating area, big, squashy sofas lend an easy, salon-like feel, separating the client from any preconceived ideas and setting a tone that’s far closer to an indulgent spa treat than a pending medical procedure.

Casting the gentlest of glows
We’ve already mentioned the word “stark”, and certainly that’s what most people associate with medical environments of all kinds, dentists included.
As with all spaces, the lighting chosen is key when it comes to dialling down that harsh, sterile feel of dentists’ offices of old.
Beyond its visual impact, soft lighting influences the psychological perception of time, slowing down the hurried pace often associated with medical appointments.
This deliberate pacing fosters a more tranquil and patient-centric experience, encouraging a positive association with dental care.
At Churchview Dental, we really think our team surpassed themselves in their lighting choices.
Several key lighting pieces combine to create a real wow, from the hanging cube lighting that greets clients as they climb the stairs to the incredible statement lighting pieces that sit over the bespoke reception desk* and cosy seating area. And bulb warmth has been carefully tailored to suit each space, with warm, ambient glows marking the stair entrance and seating space and brighter, whiter task lighting over the reception desk itself.
* Handcrafted by our talented team, naturally :)
White needn’t feel sharp
Our use of softer tones for Churchview Dental doesn’t mean we’re against a crisper palette - after all, the cleanliness of white is proven to trigger feelings of confidence in a healthcare setting, not to mention its associations with purity and simplicity.
At Baird Dentist in Leeds, a clean white colour palette is softened with soft and feature lighting to create a soothing, relaxed ambience.
Teamed with gold branding and accessories and a stunning halo feature light, this is a masterclass in minimalist sophistication - sure to set those dentist nerves at ease!

At the dentist, we look up…
In our line of work, it’s the little details that count, and our design team spends a lot of time thinking about the touches that will enhance an overall experience.
And that’s why, at Churchview Dental, clients in the chair don’t look up to just another ceiling - instead, they’re greeted by a show-stopper; a black marble-effect panel with inset spotlights, surrounded by feature LEDs.
Not only is this eye-catching ceiling a distinctive distraction, but the deep colour choice is deliberate.
Creating a strong contrast with the surrounding elements, this statement ceiling will help shift clients’ attention away from the job at hand, helping them feel less overwhelmed and more in control during their appointment.
Black also has a fabulously cocooning feel that encourages a sense of security and safety - and it absorbs light, reducing the glare of bright illumination and creating a softer, more visually comfortable environment.
Don’t forget the acoustic comforts
Acoustic comfort is a crucial consideration in any commercial space, but surely it’s more important in a dentists’ clinic than almost anywhere else!
With dental visits inducing anxiety in some patients, minimising unwanted noise is key to making the environment feel more comfortable - dampening the sound of equipment and conversations that could heighten stress levels in the susceptible.
A quieter space also supports clear communication, allowing for a better understanding of treatment plans and procedures, and privacy, preventing the inadvertent sharing of patient information.
And, as with any workspace, excessive noise can also be distracting for the dental professionals themselves, so proper management of the acoustics ensures they can stay focused.
At Churchview Dental, as well as the dampening effects of the plush textures and tactile timber-clad walls, dual-purpose acoustic ceiling rafts ensure optimum comfort.
Strategically placed to absorb sound waves, these panels not only look fabulous but also control reverberation and prevent noise bouncing around the setting - a perfect finishing touch to an incredible dental interior experience.

Elevating the dental experience
These are just a few of the things we’ve learned from creating two super-special dental environments - and they’re both now doing their bit to revolutionise the perception of dentists’ surgeries!
As with all Design Tonic spaces, the guiding principles are the infusion of comfort, calm and plenty of style for environments that prioritise health and wellbeing - and also transform the overall patient experience into one that’s purely positive.
