You can see this approach clearly in the refurbishment we delivered at 1 King Street, Leeds, where the brief was to modernise a characterful office environment and create an engaging, stylish workspace, with distinct working zones to boost functionality.
Here, zoning was achieved through a mix of considered flooring changes, lighting and furniture placement and seamless glass partitioning, offering privacy where needed without obstructing any flow of light or any sightlines.
We layered in plenty of high-end finishes and materials, and used an on-brand palette, bold furniture and carefully curated artwork to add contemporary edge and personality throughout.
And the end result? This space is now a sophisticated, high-performing office that feels contemporary and full of purpose, but is still perfectly grounded in the building’s original character - showcasing exactly how a sensitive retrofit can bring commercial appeal and long-term usability in equal measure.

A fabulous example of all the above in action is the workspace we created for White Rose Education.
Here in this gorgeous Grade II-listed canal-side building in central Leeds, with its vaulted ceilings, exposed stonework and original sash windows, the brief called for a dynamic, inspirational office that supported connection and concentration equally.
And our talented team delivered in spades, creating a beautifully biophilic design complete with a whole variety of zones - a space that feels functional, grounding and welcoming for staff and visitors alike.

At The Alternative Board (TAB), we introduced subtle layers of modern comfort and usability to support collaboration, focus and flow while keeping all the building’s personality intact - and added plenty of brand identity to boot, with playful touches like the glass manifestations and acoustic clouds all decked out in TAB’s tones.
But our favourite illustrations of how to deliver performance alongside plenty of soul in a historic building?
Let’s head to our own studio at Rose Wharf, where we carefully retrofitted a stunning heritage shell with a “practice what we preach” ethos.
The resulting space beautifully reflects who we are - creative, people-focused, rooted in thoughtful, functional design and poised for growth.
Within it, the original architectural features sit alongside contemporary zoning, biophilic elements and intuitive circulation, for a feel that’s both inspirational and highly functional - as well as proof positive that older buildings can deliver a genuinely modern employee experience when a retrofit is done with thought, purpose and expertise.
And our work at Rose Wharf didn’t end with our own HQ - we also worked with Caddick Construction to deliver a full CAT A+ fit out that includes office suites and the stunning on-site cafe and breakout space (see below).
Designed as a relaxed, welcoming hub, this social space is perfect for informal meets, collaboration and kicking back - with the exposed brickwork, arch windows and cast iron column beautifully offset with modern comforts and out-of-this-world style.
