Why your Office Design needs Experience Strategy

BACK TO ALL ARTICLES

Walk into two offices with identical square footage, location and budget, and they can still feel worlds apart - one immediately energises, with a flow and sense of rhythm that feels natural; the other might be technically well designed, but somehow feels much harder to inhabit.

The difference between the two can be hard to spot at first, because it lies in the space between design and daily experience.

It’s found more in the subtleties; the way that it’s easy to move, to connect and to feel supported through different types of work in one, while all those things feel much less intuitive in the other.

But for today’s businesses operating in a hybrid world where offices are judged on how well they support teams to do their best work, it’s a difference that matters more than ever.

And this is where experience strategy comes into play.

Experience strategy principles in action at Design Tonic HQ

What is Experience Strategy - and why does it matter in the workplace?

Dealing with how we shape spaces intentionally around the human experience - how people arrive, move, interact, focus, recharge and collaborate through the day - experience strategy (or EX) layers onto great aesthetics to make sure that an office feels as good to work in as it looks.

Long a key part of the Design Tonic Playbook, it begins by asking what people actually experience as they move through their working day in a space, and how the space can fully support them, intuitively and consistently.

Covering every moment, from first arrivals to the end of the day, a smart experience strategy takes into account how welcoming your office feels, how easy it is to navigate, where conversations naturally happen, how focus is nurtured and protected and how moments of energy and pause can be balanced.

And the end result is that it helps us make the deliberate design decisions that remove friction for your employees, support everyone’s wellbeing and help your teams work better together, every day.

For businesses, a stronger focus on experience strategy in commercial interior design matters because of how the role of the office itself has changed.

With hybrid patterns now firmly entrenched in our working lives, staff are coming into work to seek connection, collaboration, culture and momentum.

Our view here at Design Tonic? We know that exceptional EX bridges all gaps, blending human insight and good design principles so we can deliver truly out-of-this-world office spaces that work for everyone.

So what makes an office feel good to work in?

Ask someone why they enjoy working in an office designed with EX in mind and they’re most likely to talk about how the space feels to them - that it’s easy to settle into their day, that moving around it feels seamless, that there’s a sense of calm, energy or focus where they need it.

And this is the heart of experience-led design; understanding that the success of a workplace design is felt more than anything else.

The offices that people genuinely enjoy spending time in tend to share a few defining qualities, offering:

A sense of flow and ease

Great workplaces remove friction almost without you noticing, with clear sightlines, intuitive routes and well-considered layouts that mean people don’t have to put lots of thought into their movements, they just move.

When our talented team delivered the communal interiors for landmark net-zero office development No.1 St Michael’s (above), this principle shaped everything.

To create spaces that deliver a premium user experience reflecting the building’s prestige, complement SOM’s architectural vision and consistently meet the needs of high-profile tenants like Channel 4 and S&P Global, our sustainable design used circulation and zoning to create clarity within this busy, multi-tenant environment, supporting wellbeing, accessibility and intuitive use throughout the day for occupants and visitors alike.

And the same user-focused thinking underpinned the design for our own studio at Rose Wharf

With a layout planned around natural movement through the space, we incorporated plenty of social zones, focus areas and meeting points, all flowing seamlessly into one another to encourage the collaborative spirit that drives us and nurtures our team to keep producing their best work.

The result? An inspiring, versatile HQ that feels creative and confident, is rooted in thoughtful, functional design and perfectly reflects who we are - and what we offer to our clients.

Spaces that match how people work

No two working days look the same for your employees, and the best offices acknowledge that.

This is why experience-led workplaces offer a range of environments to support different types of work, from moments of quiet focus to informal collaboration; spots made for social energy to somewhere to pause and reset.

It’s crucial too that these spaces don’t feel like an add-on; they need to work as part of the overall floorplan to preserve that sense of flow that’s so important.

For the stunning heritage home of property consultancy Zerum, this meant creating a mix of open collaboration zones, quieter areas and informal meeting spaces that allow their team to choose how they want to work, without needing to book, move furniture or fight the layout.

The completed scheme delivered a workspace that flexes with the day and offers the kind of agility perfectly suited to the pace of a growing consultancy.

Comfort that goes beyond the obvious

Comfort isn’t just about soft seating or ergonomic desks - though they certainly help! - it’s also about how a space supports the body and mind over time.

Biophilic elements like plenty of natural light, balanced acoustics, great lighting, good air quality and temperature all quietly shape how people feel in a workplace; when they’re in harmony, people feel calmer and more able to sustain their concentration and energy throughout the working day.

This thinking was central to the design of Caddick Construction’s new headquarters, where comfort needs to work hard across a large, dynamic office environment to support every task type, from focused desk work to collaboration, meetings and informal social connection.

Working closely with Caddick Construction and DLA Architecture, we delivered a space where experience strategy informed every decision, from the zoning and lighting design to the material choices, acoustic treatments and beautiful biophilic detailing.

Add in carefully considered finishes, bespoke joinery and clearly defined yet fluid working areas - as well as making sure that generous daylight is beautifully maximised - and the finished space feels welcoming and easy to inhabit, supporting focus, teamwork and wellbeing while reflecting the ambitions and growth of this thriving business.

Emotional signals to create a sense of belonging

And when it comes to experience strategy, never forget to work with the emotional layer of a design too.

Materials, colour, texture and sensory details all send subtle signals about how much a business values its people, with warm finishes, biophilic elements and well-designed social spaces creating environments that feel truly human and connect with your staff on a deeper level.

When it comes to a Design Tonic space, these emotional moments are deliberate rather than decorative; built in to foster pride, comfort and connection so your employees feel genuinely considered - and you feel the commercial return in terms of engagement, retention and performance.

Why Experience Strategy makes good commercial sense

The real value of a smart, experience-led office design is commercial.

When your workplace is full of intelligent design decisions built around making its use as effective as possible, it pays in a myriad of ways; from better productivity and healthier team dynamics to a culture that’s easier to sustain and scale.

Offices designed around experience are also inherently more adaptable. They’re better able to respond to changing headcount, hybrid patterns and business priorities without the disruption or cost of constant refits - helping both to futureproof your space and to protect its long-term value.

And, of course, a strong experience strategy also helps attract and retain the best people.

When top talent has genuine choice, a considered, human-centred workplace is one of the clearest signals you can send about how you operate as a business, showing that you invest in your team, support how they work and understand that great performance starts with a great environment.

It’s here that the Design Tonic team can help.

By combining workplace insight, human-centred thinking and years of design expertise, we create experience-led offices that don’t just look out-of-this-world; they also deliver lasting value for the people who use them - and the organisations that invest in them.
