From Canteens to Club Dining: How Stadium Food Spaces have evolved

BACK TO ALL ARTICLES

There was a time when, outside of high-level hospitality, stadium food spaces conjured up images of lukewarm trays, fluorescent lighting and utilitarian layouts - with players refuelling in bland canteens with little sense of comfort, privacy or culture.

Built to feed fast, these spaces gave little thought to experience - but thankfully, those days are long gone.

Across stadiums and training grounds, dining spaces of every kind have evolved fast.

Driven by rising expectations from players, fans, sponsors and guests, their design is now about creating stylish, high-performance environments that drive experience, brand and commercial return.

From the player canteens designed for precision nutrition and psychological reset to the premium hospitality suites serving up chef-curated tasting menus, contemporary stadium dining needs to be smarter, sharper and more purpose-driven than ever before; with spaces that are destinations in their own right.

Here’s how modern canteen design and stadium hospitality spaces have transformed - and what it means for clubs aiming to lead, not follow.

1. Player Canteens: From Fuel to Function

Once upon a time, a player canteen was a perfunctory space - a place to tuck into a pre-match fry up or a post-match pie (yes, really).

But now? Player dining spaces are designed with far more intent - comfortable, cohesive zones that support team connection, downtime and everyday recovery, with a real impact on how players feel and function on the pitch.

At Leeds United’s Thorp Arch training academy, our DT Sports team delivered a clean, club-branded canteen that balances functionality with a sense of belonging; elevating the everyday refuelling experience without overengineering it.

Transformed into a smart, calming and high-spec space with cohesion and inspiration at its heart, it’s an environment that helps players reset, recharge and return to the pitch mentally and physically ready to go again.

So what key features do the DT Sports specialists look to incorporate when creating a modern canteen design? We look to:

  • Zoned seating for team cohesion or quiet recovery.
  • Integrated nutrition stations with open-plan layouts that encourage healthier habits.
  • Materials, lighting and biophilic elements that channel restaurant culture and wellness environments rather than institutional lunchrooms.
  • Smart acoustics to support communication without creating chaos.
  • And design details that reinforce the club’s culture, subtly building identity into every mealtime.

The result?

A dining environment that feels aligned with the rhythms of elite sport - and which supports everyday rituals and routines alongside performance.

2. Luxury, Loyalty and the modern Hospitality Suite

Hospitality is where stadium dining has arguably evolved the most.

While corporate boxes and silver service meals have been around for a long time, there’s no doubt that the bar has been raised significantly - clubs want premium lounges, fine dining experiences and private suites that elevate the matchday offer and genuinely impress sponsors and guests.

Almost nowhere is this better showcased than in the evolution of the modern private box.

Once fitted with a TV and a sideboard of sandwiches, today’s spaces are immersive branded experiences - less “box” and more private members’ club or luxury lounge - designed to make sponsors and their guests and partners feel like true insiders.

Like at the Emirates Stadium, where the private box we created for Adidas fuses elevated interior style with elite-level brand storytelling - think tactile surfaces, layered lighting and that unmistakable  branding, all combining to create a smart, exclusive space that’s as visually confident as it is commercially effective.

Or at Old Trafford where, working again on behalf of Adidas, our talented DT Sports team transformed another private suite into a high-impact hospitality zone - blending premium finishes with subtle nods to heritage and identity for a space that leaves a lasting impression long after the final whistle for all the right reasons.

For clubs looking to deliver a premium experience that sits between a private sponsor suite and a standalone brand lounge, there’s huge potential in elevated mid-tier hospitality - spaces that still feel exclusive, but serve a wider audience of fans, partners and clients - and come with versatility built in.

At Co-op Live, the Seat Unique VIP Lounge is a self-contained brand universe, where sweeping coves, tonal luxury, tactile seating and sculptural lighting all come together to create an environment that’s just as suited to matchday moments as it is to exclusive brand events.

And on the fan-facing front?

We can take Nottingham Forest as inspiration, where we delivered 4 distinct suites in just 10 weeks - tailoring each one to a specific hospitality tier, but tying them all together through premium materials, considered layouts and, of course, lots of bold, bright branding.

For our team, a good mix of premium hospitality spaces for a stadium covers:

  • Private suites tailored to sponsors, offering bespoke brand experiences.
  • Mid-tier lounges that offer exclusivity with broader audience appeal.
  • Agile layouts and adaptable lighting that support both matchday service and private hire.
  • Integrated tech to enhance both live viewing and off-pitch experience

Because when every hospitality space reflects the club’s ambition, the sponsor’s identities - and meets the needs of the fans who fill it?

Hospitality is less of a prestige perk than it is a powerful tool for loyalty, revenue and long-term brand value.

3. Elevated Experiences beyond Matchday

Some stadiums now include premium dining spaces designed not just for matchday hospitality, but for something more ambitious - full-scale, all-season dining destinations.

These are restaurants in their own right - attracting non-matchday bookings, hosting top-tier private events and giving sponsors and partners an elevated base in their favourite sporting place.

And what’s on the brief for these spaces?

Think designs that can shift seamlessly between uses without compromising on ambience - with key elements like:

  • Modular layouts that can flex between matchday service and private events.
  • Finishes that feel luxurious, but are built for longevity.
  • Lighting that moves easily between bright daytime energy and low-lit evening moods.
  • And smart tech integrations that support everything from open-kitchen theatre to efficient, high-volume service.

At Leeds United, the bar is set high with hospitality spaces that marry food artistry with architectural polish.

Our refurbishment of the Eddie Gray Suite takes inspiration from premium city restaurants, featuring a dry-aging display, theatre kitchen and micro herb garden - design-led details that wouldn’t feel out of place in a top-end food venue, but here have been reimagined for a stadium context.

Then there’s the Peacock Suite - now a spectacular hospitality lounge with floor-to-ceiling pitch views and a layered interior that’s sophisticated, warm and versatile.

Here, plush textures and sculptural lighting meet flexible layouts, allowing the space to shift from matchday prestige to private function hire with ease - it’s a restaurant, a lounge, a brand venue… and above all, a space that speaks to the ambitions of the club.

And these spaces don’t just generate revenues beyond matchdays - they work to enhance a club’s reputation and bring more people through the doors, more often; for food, for events and for the feeling of being part of something great.
